Scleral Lenses for Patients with Keratoconus

Do you suffer from keratoconus? Many patients with this condition have been told that the condition prevents them from being a good candidate for contact lenses. While it may be true that regular contact lenses are not a viable alternative in some cases, scleral lenses may work for you. At EyeWorks, our optometrists n Benson and Lumberton recommend scleral lenses as they are gas permeable and are often an effective solution for patients with conditions such as keratoconus.

What are Scleral Lenses?

The sclera lenses are large-diameter and gas permeable and they will not exert any pressure on your corneal tissue. The vault that goes over the cornea is adjusted per your prescription and the lenses provide clear vision and comfort. If you have a corneal irregularity the scleral lens is the best option for treatment. Our eye doctor can work with you to determine the best way forward for your individual case.

Keratoconus is actually treated more effectively with lenses than with prescription eyeglasses as some patients have difficulty seeing clearly through glasses. It can be frustrating when regular contacts do not work and your lifestyle or preferences do not work well with glasses. We are here to help! Our eye doctors and the entire staff at EyeWorks Vision Center will fit you with the lenses you need for effective vision correction and comfort.

Custom Contacts for Hard to Fit Cases

If you have had difficulty in finding lenses that work well for you, custom contacts may be the answer. Our team will work with you, beginning with a comprehensive eye exam, to the fitting of your custom lenses. We will make sure that your custom contacts are a good fit and are comfortable and effective in providing you with clear vision. Do not be discouraged if you have a corneal irregularity and have been told that contacts are not an effective option for your case.

We have a lot of experience in working with scleral lenses and helping patients with keratoconus and other eye conditions to see clearly without having to rely on corrective eyeglasses. EyeWorks Vision Center is dedicated to the eye care of our patients and we can help fit contacts for even the most difficult cases. Please schedule a consultation to begin the process of achieving healthy vision with custom contacts!
