Why Contacts Can Be So Hard to Fit
There are a number of factors that can make it difficult to find a comfortable contact lens that does what it should. The most common reasons include:
- Keratoconus (bulging of the cornea)
- Astigmatism (caused by the irregularity of the cornea)
- Dry Eye
- Presbyopia (difficulty seeing up close with contacts)
Solutions for "Difficult" Eyes
Depending on your needs, our your optometrist will have one or more solutions for you.
Dry eyes are often treated with specialty eye drops and gas-permeable or other specialty lenses. Allergies can often be overcome by thin daily-wear lenses or other solutions. Keratoconus can be treated with soft or gas-permeable lenses that have a larger surface area than normal, and that is specifically shaped for the condition. Presbyopia occurs with age and can be treated with bifocal contacts, or a modification in your prescription.
Astigmatism was once considered difficult to treat with contacts in all but the mildest cases. Traditionally, it was compensated by simply increasing the strength used to treat near- or far-sightedness. But now astigmatism can be treated with toric contact lenses, which are formed to correct astigmatism separately from the near or farsightedness of the patient's eyes. Toric lenses will be custom fit each patient.
