Scleral Contacts from Your Lumberton and Benson Optometrist

It would be nice if everyone could get a prescription for a box of mass-produced contacts and then have perfect vision. However, this is not the case for many people. Luckily, people who require scleral lenses and other types of custom contacts can still have good vision. By working with our Lumberton and Benson optometrist, we can find a pair of lenses of lenses perfect for your eyes.

What are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas permeable (GP) contact lenses that are designed for people who have certain types of eye abnormalities. Unlike regular GP lenses, they do not rest on the cornea (the tissue that covers the colored portion of the eye). Instead, they rest outside the cornea over the white, or sclera, of the eye.

This has several benefits:

  • Greater comfort (the tissue over the sclera is less sensitive than the cornea)
  • No pressure on post-surgical or damaged corneas
  • Maintain their own shape over abnormally-shaped corneas
  • Stay in the eyes better than GP contacts
  • Traps a film of protective tears in the eyes

People who wear scleral lenses usually cannot get satisfactory vision out of soft lenses. The most common reason for this is having an abnormally-shaped cornea. Because soft lenses conform to the shape of the eye, they do not correct well for irregular corneas. Scleral lenses vault over the cornea entirely and retain their own shape.

Why Do I Need Custom Contacts?

Scleral lenses are all custom contacts. In order to fit properly, they must be manufactured to very strict specifications based on measurements of your eye. This means that some time is required in order to take these measurements using specialized equipment. However, the benefit is that they are designed to be a perfect fit for your eye.
